I agree with that, frankly. Adds more visual interest to the front end.

Yeah I have kept my lights so far. I came close to changing them but I never did. I think they make the car look older and I like that the W123 is the bridge between the old Mercs and the total change of the W126. I still have my American bumpers but they are actually great in SF, all the modern cars in the city get pock marked plastic bumpers or they have to wear a bumper protector, not me! They aren't as bad as what happened to Jaguar etc. I would love a China Blue TD, I have the dark blue 300D Turbo.

Its so expensive to swap, the rubber bit covers a hole as well so you have to fix that and repaint the area. besides, they protect the car from all the SF people who just bump into cars parking. If I ever have money to burn I guess I might do it.

It does feel more rugged, but I feel that the W123 as a whole looks better with the euro lights.

It's not a question of Euro- or American spec. Some European cars also came with the double round headlights. It's a matter of MY and specs. In the earlier models, the rectangular headlamps indicated a bigger engine, much like the first 3-series with single or double headlamps. At some point they ditched the double round lamps altogether and all models got the rectangular ones.

Yes, both of the cars shown have German plates as well.

The US spec lights look really similar to the European early ones but they are different. The outer lens of European spec light is integrated with the outer part but it is open in US version.

Yeah, I'm good either way. I think both are timeless designs.
